Hiring Benchmarks
How long does it take to hire a Head of Data?
A realistic stage-by-stage timeline for senior Data and AI leadership appointments, and where most hiring processes lose weeks.
Four to eight weeks to an accepted offer is achievable. Most processes that overrun do so for reasons inside the organisation, not outside it.
A realistic timeline, stage by stage
For a Head of Data, Head of AI or equivalent leadership appointment, the searches that move quickly tend to follow a similar shape.
- Week 0 — scoping: mandate, success criteria, seniority level and compensation benchmark agreed
- Weeks 1–2 — market mapping and confidential approaches to a targeted longlist
- Week 2 — shortlist presented, typically four to six credible leaders
- Weeks 3–5 — first and second stage interviews, including technical and stakeholder assessment
- Weeks 5–6 — final panel, references and offer
Four to eight weeks to an accepted offer is a realistic target for a well-run leadership search. Anything materially faster usually means the network already existed; anything materially slower is usually process, not market.
Where the weeks are actually lost
In our experience the market is rarely the constraint. Delays cluster in a small number of predictable places.
- No agreement on what the leader is being hired to deliver, so every stakeholder assesses something different
- Interview slots booked two or three weeks out because diaries were not held in advance
- Feedback arriving days after the interview, by which point the candidate has progressed elsewhere
- Seniority and compensation revisited midway through the process
- Adding an extra stage late, after candidates have already invested significant time
Each of these adds a week. Three of them together turn a six-week search into a five-month one — and the strongest candidates rarely wait.
What shortens the process without lowering the bar
Speed at leadership level comes from preparation, not from cutting assessment.
- Agree the scorecard and interview questions before entering the market
- Hold interview slots in advance for the whole panel
- Commit to feedback within 48 hours of every stage
- Keep the process to three stages with a clear purpose for each
- Benchmark compensation before the first approach, not at offer stage
What to expect at different seniority levels
Timelines shift with the scope of the role and how specialised the market is.
- CTO, CDO and C-suite: eight to twelve weeks, often with a longer confidential mapping phase
- Head of Data, Head of AI, Head of Engineering: four to eight weeks to accepted offer
- Senior individual contributors in AI and data engineering: two to five weeks, and they move fastest of all
- Contract and interim cover: days to two weeks where the requirement is clearly defined
Key insight
Leadership hiring speed is set before the search starts — by clarity of mandate, agreed assessment criteria and held interview diaries.
